Bottas arrived at Mercedes as the replacement for Nico Rosberg, who won the Formula One championship in 2016 and promptly retired from the sport.
The Finnish driver enjoyed a solid first season with the Silver Arrows, winning three races and starting on pole on four occasions.
But Bottas finished third in the championship standings, 58 points behind Hamilton.
Bottas did have the same number of podiums (13) as Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel but knows he needs to win more races to mount a genuine title challenge.
“Next year the target is to win more,” he told motorsport.com.
“Now with the points system we have, you need to win races if you want the title, that’s how it goes.
“You need consistency, and the main thing for me was the inconsistency through the season.
“There were times I was performing really well, there were times I was performing not so well, and that was the main reason why Lewis beat me.
“He was on it all the time, and that’s what I need to target next year.”
Bottas won the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi and he is determined to take that momentum into 2018.
He said: ”I’m still trying to make my weaknesses none.
“That’s always the target, it’s never possible but you can always try to be near-perfect, and that’s what we try to work on.
“I’m going to work harder than ever this winter, and hopefully I can be better than ever next year.”
