That is according to Felipe Massa, who retired at the end of the 2017 season.

Hamilton won his fourth F1 championship this year, seeing off the threat from Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel.

It was an immediate response from the British driver as he bounced back from the disappointment of losing out to his then team-mate Nico Rosberg in 2016.

In 2017, Bottas, who replaced Rosberg, was unable to provide a consistent challenge to Hamilton as he finished the year in third place.

But the Finnish driver ended the season on a high by taking pole position and winning the final race in Abu Dhabi.

Bottas has said he intended to push Hamilton all the way in 2018 and Mercedes allow their drivers to race each other as long as points are not lost.

However, Massa believes Hamilton will be the number one driver at Mercedes next year.

“[For 2018] the team is completely on his side 100%,” Massa told Autosport.

“So he has no issue with his team-mate like he had maybe before [with Nico Rosberg].

“So many things are really on his side and he can just make himself better and better all the time.”
