Adam Lallana’s return to first-team action for Liverpool FC will be like having a new signing, according to Jason McAteer.

Lallana has not yet made a single appearance for the Merseyside outfit this term after having struggled with a thigh injury in recent months.

However, the Reds were handed a significant boost this week when Lallana returned to training outdoors at Melwood as he closes in on a return to action for the Merseyside outfit.

It remains to be seen whether Lallana will be fit enough to feature for the Reds when they take on Southampton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.

But former Liverpool FC star McAteer admits that the return of Lallana will hand the Reds a big boost ahead of the hectic festive period in the Premier League.

Speaking to Liverpool FC’s website, McAteer said: “It will feel like a new signing. Adam played a crucial part last year.

“[He] is one who can offensively play in a number of positions, so it will be great to have him back, he will be raring to go and he will be fresh.

“He has plenty of ability, he’s added goals to his repertoire as well so he will be a welcome return.

“He’s a lovely player to watch on the eye and he offers a lot. Like I said before it’s a crucial period.

“It’s a crucial time to pick up points and not drop silly points. With the demands of football now you are playing three games a week and it becomes very stressful.

“To have someone like Lallana back who you can get a run of games out of is a massive boost for the club.”

Liverpool FC head into their clash with Lallana’s former club looking to build on their impressive 4-1 victory over West Ham United before the international break.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will be looking to use the hectic festive period in the Premier League as a chance to climb the table and haul themselves back into contention in the title race.
