Alan Smith has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool will need to step their game up against Manchester United on Saturday.
Liverpool are preparing to welcome their bitter local rivals to Anfield in their Premier League clash on Merseyside on Saturday lunchtime as they bid to bounce back to winning ways in the top flight.
The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United in their most recent outing before the international break, and Klopp’s men have only won three of their opening seven Premier League games so far this season.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have been in superb form, with the Red Devils having won six of their opening seven games to leave them in second place in the table and level on points with leaders Manchester City.
Liverpool had started the season strongly and thrashed Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield in impressive fashion back in August.
However, former Gunners star Smith feels that the Merseyside outfit have plenty of room for improvement ahead of Saturday’s clash.
Speaking on The Debate on Sky Sports on Wednesday night, Smith said: “Liverpool have lost a little bit of their edge – their mojo.
“You look at the stats. We expect to see them playing with energy and covering most ground – those numbers are down now.
“They seem to have come off it a little bit for whatever reason.
“Jurgen Klopp will want to get back to playing with aggression. I covered the Newcastle game – Daniel Sturridge being in the team changes that, they can’t press from the front when he’s there.”
Liverpool are aiming to build on their fourth-placed finish in the Premier League under Klopp last season.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are aiming to win the title for the first time since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
